Where did the week go?

Friday, 21 October 2011

Hello Friday! You may be wondering about the silence on this blog. Apart from being busy with a thousand things I had a cold. Not bad enough to keep me in bed, but nasty enough to make me feel too tired to blog and sometimes even too tired to think.

The week is almost over and I feel much better now. Have even bought a skein of lovely grey yarn for a new hat that will go well with my orange gloves. It's time for something warm. Lesson learned.

So you can guess where the colour inspiration for this treasury comes:

Black pottery from Latvia

Wednesday, 5 October 2011

I've a soft spot for for all things ceramic and when I saw this brand new Etsy shop I knew it had to be shared with you on this blog. Since Līga and Krists come from the same region as me it's also a great opportunity to write another post in the random Local Treat series, so without farther ado enjoy the beauties from TePottery!

No glazes or colouring is used and the black surface with a little metalic shine is the result of firing in a woodfired kiln. The final stage involves closing the kiln and letting all the oxigen to burn out. At then the magic happens - the clay turns black. It's one of the oldest methods of clay treatment.

The clay comes from the local fields and is turned into pots and plates like thousands of years ago - only by hands, no potter's wheel or molds have been empoyed. Just clay, hands and fire. Yet it's a time consuming process and it takes at least a month to finish each piece.

For more finished pottery and its creation visit TePottery on Etsy and Flickr.

Take me to Munamägi!

Monday, 26 September 2011

This is what Latvians do. They go to Munamägi. Now and then. Often. About once a year like me. The proportion of cars with Latvian number plates in the parking slot was 6 out of 8 yesterday afternoon. That's quite common sight. You can even buy the entrance tickets for the observation tower with Latvian currency there.

Actually it's called Suur (Big) Munamägi and it's located in Estonia. It's the highest point in the Baltic States - 318m (1043 feet) above the sea level. The pictures are taken form the top of the observation tower.

The beauty of the landscape, the closeness to Latvia and 30 years old extremely popular Latvian movie do the trick. A place to fall in love with.

Have a wonderful week!

Shop update

Monday, 19 September 2011

Hello Monday! You might want to know how I succeeded in fulfilling  my weekend plans. Everything is done except blogging, but I'll catch up with that during the week.

As promised I took pictures of my latest creations. Two delicate and simple necklaces with a little rustic feel about them. The pendants are small - just 3/4 inches (that's less than 2cm).

Love how the opalescent white glass bead reflects the orange enamel.

The first shot of this one I showed already on Friday, but the lights weren't good and the purple looked too blue, so it needed a re-shoot (that's why the Friday post has new picture too).

Both necklaces are already listed in my shop - here and here.

Hope your week has begun on a productive note too!
