My creative space

It's that time of the year again. I'm knitting tiny mittens and getting ready for the festive season. Although these are really tiny and not meant for human hands I absolutely enjoy the process.

In Latvia mittens play an important part in courtship and marriage rituals. OK, played an important part. A girl needed many pairs for her dowry. And these were various richly patterned colourful mittens with edgings of fringe or scalops. A tradition of dowry is gone, but mittens... they stay. Actually, a pair of mittens like that is a must in Latvian winter, firstly, because of their beautiful patterns and secondly, they are super warm exactly because of those colourful patterns.

This is why I love mittens! Even when I make them for gnomes' hands.

To play along and see who else is playing this week visit kootoyoo. It's fun!
